The main idea of #4 is that there's this thing that's happening all the time - we're constantly perceiving, thinking, making decisions, pursuing goals, learning, etc. It's so ubiquitous that it's invisible. It's like the fish in that David Foster Wallace story who say "what's water?" But then, when we play games, we have an opportunity to become vividly aware of these things. Perception, for example, goes from being the necessary, pre-existing, underlying foundation of thought, to being the object of thought - "keep your eye on the ball." To get good at a game we have to tinker with the machinery of our own mental processes.
I'm working on a game at the moment and just these summaries are hugely clarifying and affirming. I can tell I'm going to love this book.
